이 소재는 그동안 미국 및 유럽 시장에서 항산화 효과를 겨냥한 기능성 식품에 보조 첨가제로 사용되어 왔으나 최근 숨겨진 다양한 기능성이 발굴되면서 차세대 허브 소재로의 방향이 설정되고 있는 소재라고 할 수 있다.

지난 2003년 미국 브리티시 컬럼비아 대학의 키즈 교수팅이 미국 농화학회지에 발표한 내용에 따르면 단델리온의 경우 열수로 추출한 획분 및 초산 에틸로 추출한 획분, 즉 친수성 및 지용성 획분 공히 유해 산소 활성 차단에 기인하는 것으로 발표되었는데 이는 획분 내에 존재하는 루테올린(luteolin) 및 루테올린 7-글루코시드(luteolin 7-glucoside) 성분의 활성에 기인하는 것으로 밝혀졌다(Antioxidant, Prooxidant, and Cytotoxic Activities of Solvent-Fractionated Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) Flower Extracts in Vitro. J. Agric. Food Chem. 2003, 51, 301-310).

한편, 단델리온은 비(非) 비만성 당뇨병에도 효과가 있는 것으로 밝혀져 주목을 받고 있는데 지난 2000년 크로아티아의 자그레브 대학 페레브스키 교수팀의 연구 결과에 의하면 알록산으로 유발시킨 비비만성 당뇨 쥐 총 72마리를 대상으로 단델리온 추출물을 투여한 결과 혈중 글루코즈 (P<0.05) 의 농도 및 프락토즈아민 (p<0.01) 의 농도가 유의성 있게 감소되는 효과를 관측 할 수 있었다(Effect of ‘antidiabetis’ herbal preparation on serum glucose and fructosamine in NOD mice. Journal of Ethnopharmacology 75 (2001) 181–184).

그러나 가장 흥미로운 기능성 발굴의 예는 지난 1999년 원광대학교 김형민 교수팀에 의하여 연구 발표된 산화질소 생성 촉진에 관한 내용으로(Activation of inducible nitric oxide synthase by Taraxacum officinale in mouse peritoneal macrophages. General Pharmacology 32 (1999) 683–688) 최근 산화질소 촉진 기작에 대한 다양한 응용 효능 예를 들어 성 기능 향상 등에 관한 보조제로의 가능성도 엿볼 수 잇는 대목이라고 할 수 있겠다.
